Hi, it may be a bit late but I have a great beginer board called papilio one from gadgetfactory:

http://papilio.cc

It uses onboard 2-channel USB to serial converter that can be used to program the chip as well as for communications. Its cost is around 3k.

I have a kit, but it works with parallel port. 2900/- let me know if interested. You can get a USB programmer for it in rs 1000/-. I can tell you the source for it

Hi,

5000 - 6000 what? it helps to put the currency :-)

I assume you mean rupees, so about say $120 or £80.

I would have a look at Digilents site, they make some decent cheap FGPA start boards, which can be programmed via USB, plus have many helpful books/tutorials to go with them. Nexys 2 springs to mind, though I have no direct experience of them and not sure of the price.

When starting with FPGAs, I went a different route of buying the programmer and making my own board - this means you are not limited to one board, as you have the programmer (useful if prototyping a commercial priduct) and I think it helps one to learn more about the finer points.

If it's just for a one off experiment, then I would certainly grab a cheap dev board though.
