PCB Layout: Swap layers not working

TrinityDigi ...

Hello all.

I am new to this system and am testing it out with a simple circuit schematic and layout.

The schematic tool is fine, as seems to be the translate to pcb layout.

All of the SM components have been placed on the top layer of my two layer board.

How do I put a component onto another layer?

Documentation says to select the component and then select swap layers from the menu.

But this has no effect.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

It's definately a two layer board - I can see the two layers being shown in the layers side panel but when I do the procedure mentioned in the doc the component still resides on the top layer - i.e. it's only visible when the top layers are selected in the layers side panel.

Hope you guys can help.

Thanks

Gareth

Hi, I had this same problem today, but I was using F to flip with no effect.

R for rotate was working on other components, but I hadn't tried it on my mBed module.

Now what I discovered is that I have to select the component and then rotate it with R and after that F works! If I just use F  immediately it does not flip (as verified using 3D viewer).

Can someone verify this and report as a bug if confirmed.

Great - that clears things up nicely.

Swap Layers shortcut Q applies to tracks being swapped from top to bottom (or vice versa).  There is also Change Layers, shortcut L and this allows you to change a track or track segment from one side to the other but also to an inner layer if it's a multilayer board.

AHHH!  Right - it FLIPing works now.

So what is the difference between swap layers of a component and flipping components?

I noticed that when I select text the swap layers feature does move it to the bottom layer - but this does not work for pads etc.  But flip does.

Cheers for your help.

Maybe you are not really flipping the component.  Try selecting the component - make sure it is highlighted and then press F on the keyboard (flip shortcut).  To be certain if it has or hasn't flipped take a look in the 3D viewer.
