Which FPGA should I use?

Which FPGA should I use for my project shown here:

http://www.designspark.com/spectrum

As this is a "just for fun" & learning project, budget is limited.

Thanks!

(Or should I even be using FPGA at all?)

Altera or Xilinx - can't go wrong with either. but you may not be able to tell which in the family till you get it design cos of number of Logic Blocks you need - Guess you will want something with on board RAM or do that external with SRAM?

Altera did some fab web / student tools you can download, design and simulate with.

I used Altrea myself, but may find this turns into a Intel 'v' AMD type topic.

I guess I need to study the ULA first.  I'll have a look at the online tools and add them to DS if they aren't already added!
