How to create off board components without a PCB footprint?

Avatar Posted by Dr.Tube at

Hello there,
I've been working with DS for more than a year now, and I'm quite happy with the program.
I want to create components which will not be placed on the PCB but will be connected to the PCB with some wires, but not with a connector! I want to be able to place the individual pads (for the connecting wires) myself. Somehow I cannot create a component that doesn't have a package. How can I solve this problem?

Kind regards
Xavier van Unen.

Hi, the problem you have is actually not a problem at all. You need to create a normal component with package and so on, simply not fit the component. Otherwise you can create individual pads on your PCB where you can later solder wires. Hope this helps

I usually create a sheet that I call "Hardware" where I put all the components of the PCB, as the screws, the (not PCB) connectors, heatsink, sockets and the PCB itself.

I use a custom components (without package) that in the schematic is just a rectangle called .... HW.
I give to all my HW components a significative name, and this will populate my BOM when generated.
(I move the reference, the name and the code of the component in the rectangle)

I don't know for what reason it's needed to connect these HW components to an unexistant network (that I call "HW") to complete my BOM with these components.
The "HW" network will not translate in the PCB and neither the "HW" components.

This is relative to the version 3.0 of DSPCB.
