LED Lighting in Homes.

Hi David,

How do you get on with the cabling for large installations of LED strips? I can visualise massive wiring looms being necessary for this kind of thing.

    Hi David,

LED design on the face of it seems simple. remove the old bulbs, replace with brighter, longer lasting new technology.  Fantastic!   In reality: for an LED design to work correctly, there are many factors to take into account. i.e

    1. Energy Efficiency (lm/W):   LED numbers <> system / luminair efficiency

    2. Cost effective (lm/$):  LED roadmap <> other system components

    3. Colour quality:  CRI

    4. Colour consistency:  Binning

    5. Design Considerations:  Electrical, Thermal, Optical, Dimming and networking

    6. Reliability and Lifetime behaviour of LED systems:   More than the bare LED

It is the WHOLE system, not just the LED.

If your flickering problem was solved by changing the power supply, it seems to suggest that the strip was underpowered. The heat is dissipated through the metal strip housing ,  this is not always practical in an enclosed ceiling space and may drop the efficiency. Design simulations are very difficult to account for all the places you would want to use the LED.  Another factor is the quality of the original solder/paste connection of the LED to the thermal dissipation path, it may look Ok in production but can deteriorate with age.

Diode Inc. have a good simulation tool for one of there device drivers. Please see High power LED driver: - ZXLD1350

With the strip lights over a meter, i have seen various designs of running serial/parallel combinations or supply from both ends.  What are you using?  Also the colour is always a question inthe home. Have you gone for the warm whites or cool LED's?

    Best Regards

    Pat

I have been installing led lighting on super yachts for the last 4 years and that is my area of expertise at the moment we use mainly striplighting now that it has become very popular with the yacht owners.

Problems I have come across is flicking led striplights and it seems to be only some types  around that tend to flicker. The problem was solved by installing switch mode power supplies to solve the flicking problem.

I have installed a few LED lamps in my home I found the cost high but hope fully the advanage of power saving should hope fully bring costs down.I have got the latest copy that has arrived in New Zealand of the Elector Magazine with the LED lighting supplement which in that they have developed a 50 watt LED light. With the striplights the first meter dissapates the most heat the striplights were are useing is in the region of 16 watts per meter the temperture drops quite noticeably over length of 5 meters which is the maxium length allowed for a single run.
