Interconnections

They're everywhere! From your iPod to the kettle, everything has a connector nowadays.
But they're complex little beasts, despite the abuse they get in day-to-day-life. Often crafted from high-performance materials and manufactured to rocket-scientist-type tolerances, we often ignore the plugs that make our technology work.
Well, no more! Whether you are a connoisseur of connectors or a purveyor of plugs, this area is for you to wax lyrical on the subject of your choice. And if you are a complete novice to the world of stuff that clunks or clicks (or, occasionally, buzzes), you are welcome to come and look around. Hopefully, you will find this area enlightening, and if there's anything you need to know, don't be afraid to ask a question.

I would like to know if anyone has any good suggestion for nano/micro connectors. We need to squeeze at least 30 "pins" (the more the better up to 128) in to a total area of 6×2mm. Also the height for one of the mates is very limited, preferably <2mm (but I'll try to convince the boss to loosen that requirement). The dimensions of the other mate are not picky at all. The thing doesn't have to be very robust, if we can attach it and take it away 20 times that's fine.
Grateful for any suggestions

Hey i spent 12 years working for Tyco Electronics as a Sales Engineer. we had 1.5 million different connector products to sell at any one time. They just canceled 300,000 last year i.e. they mothballed the tooling...
But you know what every design engineer wanted something different so the manufacturing companies just complied..
I now work for a Electronics Distributor and guess what i still have millions of products to sell but now they don't just connect the life blood of the circuits we also supply the semi's and all the glue products man how many different versions of 'HC' chip do you want...lol

Hi Carles,
I agree - there are too many types of USB connector. The USB that plugs into my digital camera is different to the one that plugs into my phone. Which is also different from the USB on my printer.
Unfortunately, the standard is written around the communications protocol (the software), with the connector being of secondary importance.
Life would be easier if the connectors were standard. Manufacturers, please take note!
Not sure I can help much, but I feel your pain!

Hehe! Vendors make their own substandarts hehe!

Hello,
I have a question about USB connectors, beeing USB something so spread across different products, why are there so many types of USB connectors?
For example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Usb_connectors.JPG
Wouldn't it be enough with male B-type and micro or mini usb connectors instead of having 6 different kinds or connectors? (counting mini 5-pin and mini 8-pin as two different kinds)
Thanks,
Carles
